Morning! Just a little note to say thank you for the show, I listen everyday and love hearing all the great stories. I always say I was born too late and missed all the good stuff, but I was fortunate enough to get to see Jerry and the boys about 9 times before he passed. I do have two questions though - A) will the Deadheads for Obama show be available for download eventually? and 2) what's the latest on a possible 2009 tour? If you guys could give me some insight it would totally make my day. Thanks and peace be with you always. ~Tam

Heard the show & honestly I was not impressed at all, sounds like they did not reherse at all and seemed to me the oldgang just was not into it. I think it was more for politics then for Dead Heads. IPlease don't get me wrong, ig they toured I would be there in a heat beat, I also think they should include Donna at least for a few specail dates....like here in the SF bay area their home.

EYES25Ran into my old Friend Dan Healy at a recent DSO show in New Hampshire. With Dan on the soundboard it is almost creepy what DSO is able to do. I've heard some negative comments on The Golden Road from some of the callers about the band. I have a lot of respect for the Dark Star Orchestra, they aren't trying to be the Dead, they are an actual orchestra, nobody complains when the New York Philharmonic does Vivaldi or Bach. For anyone that was not lucky enough to have seen the Dead with Jerry I highly recommend a visit to a DSO show.

I've been enjoying the return of the Dead to XM so much! Thanks guys for all the work (and fun!)

There was a fantasic 40+ minute verison of He's Gone (mostly instrumental) that was played on the XM57 channel on 11/30around noon EST. Does anyone know, or can dig up that incredible track. I wanna have it! SteveG P.S: XM57 was a great idea. Hat's off to the Sirius guys who figured that one out!

You people that are infactuated with Donna need to get a clue or keep going to Trickster shows. No dis to them, but shes played out, she aint and never was that great. When the boyz get together we dont need nastalgia, were looking to jam. and whoever said change rocks wasnt a ggod show must not have been there. except for a few loose moments in between a few songs, who else could have jamed like that-phsycedelic style

Thanks so much to everyone for bringing us this channel, i listen all i can. the great interviews & shows are always top notch. The concerts are so so nice to tune into daily,, there is something always for everyone,, for the guys like myself who loves the early 70's concerts, and also for the best of the 80's & 90's Dead shows, its always great. I really love the guest Dead Head DJ's,, that must be such a blast to do! I don't know what we would do without this, Thanks guys for bringing us such a great show, 24 hours a day! Just like the Grateful Dead you bring great pleasure to life! Thank You!!

I'm a deadhead from Copenhagen, Denmark (Scandinavia). I would really like to go to one of the concerts with the Dead in 2009. Therefore I would like to get in contact with some of you American Deadheads, who could maybe help me get 'sorted out', when I come to the states?? 'Let the good times roll'

I was just listening to "Tales from the Golden Road" on Sirius, and Gary Lambert said that he just finished writing the liner notes for a brand new, complete show, Rhino vault release. He made it a point to say that this won't be a part of the Road Trips series. Hopefully all of the Road Trips haters will be pleased (if only for a moment). Personally, I love Road Trips, and I love complete shows too. What I'd like to see is a new box set and a JGB release (or two). Nevertheless, I wait patiently...

What's the deal? We finally get a new schedule format on the serius Dead website at the end of January and it still isn't updated past feb. 5. The schedule has been hit and miss,missing a lot more than hitting! You would think we would get better service for something we have to pay for, I've tried making David Gans aware of this problem through the feedback option on this site but no response. Anyone have another source for pre-broadcast info? I just want to record the shows I've been to, hard drive space is NOT unlimited.

Im planning on getting sirius radio this spring when I get a new vehicle- someobody told me you can request certain shows-Is that true?-and if so, how do you do that? Decent (better than decent) recordings of two of those shows are currently circulating in the Vineyard: Euphoria Ballroom 7/16/70 - included as part of the "Ladies and Gentlemen..." vine Oxford Plains Speedway 7/2/88 - included as part of the "Vineyard 1st Anniversary Vine" There's eight or nine people already on both of the signup lists so it would be nearly two months before the shows could get to you, but for a patient 'head, there they are! The Tales... last week was a great show...the hours flew by...Tribute bands I believe are essential in keeping the music alive and thriving..not only with the older heads but by turning newbies onto the love and timeless bliss of Dead tunes...good stuff...the torchbearers are definitely out there helping to keep it burning brightly...much love...see ya at Camp ZOE in April!!!! it's right around the corner!!! i agree donna would be the cat's meow if she played a few show's im going to the chicago show and that would be awsome to see her play with the dead,seen donna a few times at vibes in ny 2005 2006,and i was impressed with her show's seen her 2007 in black river falls wisconson,the three g's,i was disapointed with the turn out of hippies maybe 500 people there when she played only about 50 people watched her,i was sort of embarrased for her,thought they wouldn't come back to the three g's in black river falls,last year ohio.2009 back here i'm shocked!the campground is awsome,hopefully more hippies this year!give me some feed back,i wish and hope the dead play at alpine valley one of the greatest out door venue's in the good old usa!

I like the show, however, I got one beef with Lemieux's presentation. Play the songs first, then give me the schpeal on what went down this night. Or give me the schpeal but don't tell me the songs I'm about to hear. The only joy of hearing this stuff is not knowing what's coming next. How much fun would it be if the Grateful Dead came out and announced the set list before the show began. It would suck. So if you read this stuff David, how about it? I like hearing the schpeal if you were there and any insights to the crowd, weather, ambiance, etc from the show your about to play. But don't announce the songs beforehand. I like to think 99% of the Heads out there can recognize the tunes and it makes listening all that more enjoyable when you don't know what's coming next. And it would be better than having to turn off the radio until yer done yakkin' and guess when to turn it back on.

XM Sirius is broadcasting Ratdog's Denver show Monday night at 10 pm Eastern time.

I can't express how happy I am now that XM carries the GD Channel. Now I enjoy the Dead with every mile I drive. Honestly, I didn't know how well I'd like it as previously I listened to GD discs (got 'em all!!) on the car CD player. However, I know find myslef listening almost exclusively to the GD Channel in the car. Interestingly, I now listen to the Dead on my computer a lot more. As I type this I am ripping the entire Dick's Picks series so I can listen at home.

I was enamoured with the version of Brokedown Place that was played Sirius XM 57 on Tuesday early evening (9/15) by a female vocalist. Can anyone tell me who that was and what recording? Thanks much.

Ever since the beginning of the year, right around the time David L started playiing the San Diego shows in This Day n Dead History, the music clips have a slight, buthighly noticeable, skip around every 20 seconds or so. Does anyone else hear this? I think every day, I hear the music David has for us, but it skips a beat as I say, every 15 or 20 seconds. My guess is the software that uploads his selections to the web is faulty. Just thought I'd mention it and I hope you can remedy it. I do love the segment and I listen to it every day on my way to work.

David Lemieux, Congratulations on your 1,000th show! I drive OTR and often set my alarm to 6:57 a.m. so as to not miss the show. I complained to Sirius about removal of the 11:00 a.m. airing. I particularly enjoy hearing excerpts from shows I've attended in Buffalo, Rochester, Watkins Glen, and Orchard Park, NY. Keep up the good work and I look forward to Today In Grateful Dead History tomorrow.Peace!

As the Grateful Dead song goes, Bob Weir has been playing in the band - one band or another - his entire adult life. But never a band quite like the one he'll be playing in for one night this fall. Appropriately enough, the singer-guitarist plans to open his unprecedented Oct. 22 performance with the Marin Symphony with a new orchestral arrangement of the Dead's classic "Playing in the Band." "It's something I've wanted to do since forever," Weir, who's 62, said from his home in Mill Valley. "I've wanted to do something like this since I was in my teens, or even younger." Billed as "First Fusion," it will be a history-making concert for the symphony, never having shared its stage with a rock musician before. And it's about time. Not 'It s something I've wanted to do since forever,' says musician Bob Weir, about playing with a symphony. (Provided by Susana Millman) to jump on the bandwagon, so to speak, but I've been after them to take on a collaboration like this for years. And now, in these lean economic times, they finally have. "The folks at the Marin Symphony are in pretty desperate financial shape," Weir said. "They need a big show, but they also need to bring in a new audience. That's a constant concern for symphonies. They want to get fresh ears in there because those people will come back. They do great stuff, but nobody knows about it." The plan is for the evening to be divided into two parts: In one, Weir and the 41-piece orchestra perform symphonic arrangements of Grateful Dead songs. Other than "Playing in the Band," Weir wants the other tunes getting this treatment to be a surprise. Advertisement "We wanted to be kind of ambitious," is all he would say. "We took some of the low-hanging fruit, and we went climbing as well." He's working closely on the arrangements with Italian composer-arranger Giancarlo Aquilanti, director of the Stanford Wind Ensemble. "We've been doing a lot of work at my home studio with synthesizers and scoring programs with sound libraries attached," Weir explained. "We talk down the arrangements and then mock them up. Along the way, I have to learn Italian because the spoken language of symphonic music is in Italian. Don't have to learn that much, but it's a fair bit." The other half of the program will showcase Weir and four or five rock musicians from his bands - Furthur and Ratdog - playing improvisational pieces with the Grammy-nominated chamber group Quartet San Francisco as well as symphony musicians picked for their ability to improvise. The Dead pioneered improvisation in rock, but it's not all that common in classical music. "Classical musicians often times do not improvise," Weir said. "They're technicians. But what I want to do is get some interaction happening. I want the soloists from the orchestra to be able to take off a little bit, if they can. And we're finding soloists who can improvise and do call and response and that kind of stuff. I've got a couple of instrumentalists I can trade licks with. We're hoping to salt that in there because I have not heard that done before." Rock musicians collaborating with symphony orchestras has been done before, so this isn't groundbreaking in that sense. Sting is touring with a five-piece rock group and the 45-member Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, which he calls "the biggest band I've ever had." What Rolling Stone calls his most exciting album in years, "Symphonicities," is a set of orchestral remakes of songs from his solo and Police repertoires. And let's not forget Metallica's deafening 1999 collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony, which I described at the time as "like playing a Stradivarius with a chain saw." "I've seen the Metallica-San Francisco Symphony video and learned things from it," Weir said. "I've learned that I don't think the band can play quite as loud as those guys were playing." Stylistically, rock songs and symphonic pieces aren't as incongruous as you might suspect. Weir and his late partner in the Dead, Jerry Garcia, began as folk/bluegrass musicians, and many of the Dead's songs, particularly the ones written with lyricist Robert Hunter, are essentially electrified contemporary folk music. "For hundreds of years, a great deal of classical music was flights of fancy that composers took on folk songs," Weir pointed out. "Bach was famous for that. So was Mozart." I would add Dvorak to that list, Copland, many others. The symphony offered this gig to Weir and his Dead-Furthur bandmate, bassist Phil Lesh, who wasn't up for a daunting project. Whether Lesh will play on the night of the show is up in the air. "I'm thinking of using two bass players, both of whom play for Ratdog," Weir said, mentioning stand-up bassist Rob Wasserman and electric bassist Robin Sylvester. "Lesh passed on the project early on, so what I'm trying to do is plump it up so that he can't refuse, but I've got some work to do." After a successful summer tour with Lesh and Furthur, Weir's focus is on "First Fusion," and what the collaboration will do to open doors for future projects like it. "If this goes well, I'm sure I'm going to have all kinds of offers from the Wolftraps and the pops orchestras back East," he predicted. "That will be fun, and that in turn could turn into more ambitious projects that would come back locally. But, for now, I'm pursuing it one step at a time."
